Ever since the advent of YouTube, new trends catering to the video-content sphere have emerged. Among them, is video blogging or ‘Vlogging’ which has captured the internet and the YouTube world with a storm. Vlogging is a concept that entails documenting your everyday life and share your thoughts and opinions with the world. This new trend has changed the dimensions of blogging altogether, with YouTubers documenting their lifestyle and accumulating millions of dollars in capital. Vlogging has provided them with an opportunity of livelihood, giving them the opportunity to pursue their passion in face of this competitive world.

Vlogging has become the most popular type of content consumed by viewers, with viewership measuring in millions daily. This popularity has made this, the new craze of the internet, with different content creators, who were previously doing their own things, quickly turning to this way of video blogging. Vlogging can be categorized in different types, it can mean documenting your daily life, and it can also mean traveling around the world, showing beautiful places and culture, also informing the audience on how to travel. Vlogging has changed its marketing dimensions. Companies are investing millions in sponsoring these vloggers and influencers, making their products and services known to the fans and audience of sponsored vlogger/vloggers.

This crazed has gone to the next level, so much so that the government of different states is inviting vloggers and different video content producers to their country as an attempt to jump-start tourism in their country. Tourism has become a significant part of economic structure, with countries investing fortunes to spread the tourism industry. But we know, with every good opportunity comes its limitations. Mainly, vloggers travel to places that are famous and are tour destinations, but since it’s a growing phenomenon, the famous tourist destinations are already covered by every big vlogger. Now the need to travel to the unknown is quickly catching up, with vloggers traveling to third world countries and other under-developed countries, showcasing their arts and beautiful destinations, promoting their culture. This is where the trouble starts.

Vloggers traveling to these countries are often not considerate enough to know the rules and regulations of those countries and they are often found in violations of those countries’ laws.

The very recent case of two Australian vloggers is the example every vlogger must take and learn from. Jolie King and her fiancé Mark Firkin were two vloggers that were detained in Iran. They were kept in Evin prison, one of the most notorious prisons of Iran, named “hell on earth” by the international media. It was only after their identities were revealed by a journalist, that their whereabouts were revealed. Pouria Zeraati, a London based Iranian journalist, was the first one to reveal their identities and whereabouts. Before that, their fans did not know where the couple was, since their last trip to Pakistan. It was only after the effort of Zeraati that a process started which made Iran release those Australian vloggers.

“The family says this was a misunderstanding and Jolie King and her fiancé Mark Firkin were unaware of the Iranian law which bans drone flights without a license,” Zeraati said online.

There are several other cases of Vloggers getting detained, solely for not knowing the laws and rules of those countries. It is important to know the laws and rules regarding content creation or video blogging, prior to traveling.

It is important to respect the laws of every country, respecting the fact that each country differs from another, and also that not doing so can get you in serious trouble. An important step towards controlling this is to take this case as an example and spread awareness. Vloggers should inform and educate the masses and other small vloggers on the risk of visiting different places and what to do in preparation. It is better to be cautious than to be in prison.
